Australian National Botanic Gardens

Discover the stunning diversity of native Australian plants at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, the outdoor living classroom for students. Schools can experience engaging, interactive and hands-on ranger guided programs or wander and learn at their own pace.

Our facilitated programs have been designed to meet Australian Curriculum targets in science, geography, sustainability, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Our experienced educators specialise in bringing the stories of the Gardens to life. Students will explore the connections between people, plants and animals on a journey of enquiry-based learning.

Budding Botanist: germination, flowers & photosynthesis

What role do seeds, roots, stem, leaves and flowers play in the life cycle of a plant? How do these features of a plant help them survive?

In this program your students will:

  • wonder at plants growing in different environments, what do they need to survive?

  • discover the structure of living plants in the Gardens, discuss their roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruit.

  • enjoy a game based on the life cycle of a plant.

  • explore a variety of fruit, flowers, leaves and seeds under microscopes.

You’ll also learn about the Australian National Botanic Gardens’ role in conserving threatened plant species.

Pond Dipping: Lifecycles and Food-chains (Yr 3–4)

Have you ever wondered what lives beneath the surface? 

Get hands-on and dip for the weird and wonderful creatures that live in our freshwater ponds. 

Examine the skimmers, slinkers and swimmers and identify them with magnifying glasses. 

Can you figure out who feeds on who in our wonderful wetlands and how they complete their lifecycles?

This eye-opening activity acknowledges the deep relationship between Australia’s First Nations people and Country, including plants. Discover the traditional uses for all kinds of different plants from across Australia and get hands on with our very special collection of objects.  

You will also examine the importance of looking after the land, water, plants, animals to maintain a living culture and country for future generations.

MEGAFAUNA - Self-guided trail

Step back in time and meet the enormous creatures that inspire myths and legends in Australia.

Imagine yourself in Pleistocene Australia as you discover the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Roaming around you are wombats the size of cars, flightless birds twice the size of emus and gigantic seven-metre long lizards.

Trail maps are available online or can be requested for your group. Available during July only.

DIY: Teacher Guided Visit

The Gardens are an outdoor classroom for everyone. Schools are welcome to wander and learn at their own pace.

There is no charge for school groups to visit the Gardens and explore. However, bookings are essential for safety reasons.

We also have a range of resource material that self-guided groups can use to explore the Gardens.

Whether you have a curriculum to follow or just want to enjoy a day in the great outdoors, a teacher-guided visit is the perfect way for your school to explore the Gardens.

Habitat Hunter

If you were a wild animal what would you need to survive? Could you find the perfect habitat right here at the Botanic Gardens? 

Take a toy animal friend on a grand adventure hunting for habitats big and small. 

Observe your animal friend, looking for clues to find out what it might need in its perfect home. Choose from a wide range of Australian habitats including leaf litter, ponds, ancient trees and more. 

Along the way you may even encounter animals that already live in the Botanic Gardens and investigate homes from tree hollows to rocks to damp mossy hideouts.

Pollination Investigation

Become nature detectives and follow the clues to find out all about the life.  

In this action-packed adventure, discover the lifecycles and food chains of bees and flowering plants. Play our pollination game, act out the lifecycle of a flowering plant and visit our very own Bee Hotels. Along the way you may encounter real life pollinators such as insects, birds, mammals and even reptiles.

Buzzy Bees

Are you as Buzzy as a Bee? Do you know what bees eat for breakfast? Do you know where the strawberries and apples in your lunch box really come from?  

Play our pollination game to answer these questions and more. Discover the features of bees and flowering plants and find out why bees are so important for our food supply.
